How to conveniently use your payment card

PIN

Your payment card has its own four-digit PIN code (Personal Identification Number). You will receive the PIN by post at the address you have stipulated or at your branch of KB. The PIN protects your payment card against misuse by unauthorised parties and so it must also be handled as such (see safe use of your card). You will enter the PIN when paying by card in a shop or when performing transactions in an ATM. The staff in the shop may ask you to sign a sales slip and enter your PIN at the same time. You may also be asked to present an ID card. Such procedure protects you against payment card misuse.

PIN change

If you are not satisfied with your PIN or are having difficulty remembering it, you can change it at any time in the KB network of ATMs.

TIPS

  • Do not use part of your card number or other numerical data which can be easily ascertained.
  • Do not use four same numbers, part of your date of birth or dates of birth of family members, or the numerical combination of alarms to safety deposit boxes, door entry points or similar.
  • Make sure that nobody was watching you enter your PIN and do not allow yourself to be distracted during a transaction.
  • PIN change cannot be performed if there are less than 45 days until the end of your card’s validity. Your card’s validity is stated on the front of the card.

If you forget your PIN, ask for the PIN to be resent via MojeBanka or contact any branch of KB with a request for generation of a new PIN.

Cashless payments

It is currently possible to pay by card in supermarket chains, at filling stations, in travel agencies, airlines, restaurants and hotels. In short, in the whole commercial network anywhere in the world.

Card payments in shops

Shops are always marked with the logos of the payment cards which can be used for payment.

Payment for goods and services via a payment terminal

When paying by card, the vendor will ask you to sign the receipt and/or enter your PIN (on the payment  terminal). The vendor will return your payment card together  with a copy of the receipt and confirmation of your purchase immediately after performance of the transaction. Keep receipts carefully as you can use them afterwards to check the transaction with the account statement or when making a claim.

TIPS

  • We recommend that you check the date and amount on the sales slip.
  • Take care that nobody was watching you enter your PIN u!
  • Always watch how the staff handle your card when paying by card.
  • Do not allow the staff (e.g. in restaurants) to leave your presence with your card. The payment should be performed in your presence via a portable terminal or you should go with the staff to the terminal. You are entitled to this.
Payment for goods and services using an imprinter = mechanical reader

Only embossed payment cards can be used to pay for goods and services using an imprinter. The vendor will print data recorded on the card and the identification label of the business premises (shop or hotel etc.) on the receipt (sales slip) with the aid of the imprinter. He will fill in the date and price onto the receipt, including the currency in which the transaction is performed (SUBTOTAL box) and  give you the receipt to sign.

TIPS

  • Always carefully check the accuracy of the amount and whether the correct currency has been filled in (USD, CZK or similar). If the amount  of the currency is incorrect, do not sign the receipt and ask for a new one to be drawn up with corrected data, and insist on all incorrectly filled in receipts being destroyed by being torn up.
  • Data must not be crossed out or overwritten on the receipt! The vendor will always return one copy of the receipt together with your card.
  • If you like, you can add a tip into the EXTRA TIPS column unless this has been crossed out by the vendor (otherwise, cross it out).
  • Fill in the total price into the TOTAL box (including the tip if there is one) and sign the  receipt the same as your signature on the card signature strip.
Payment for goods and services over the Internet

Payment by card over the Internet is implemented as a payment without the physical presence of the card. This type of payment can be performed using a virtual e-Card or embossed or electronic payment cards. You may be asked by the Internet vendor to provide the following in terms of these payments:

  • the number and validity of the card, name of the card company (e.g. VISA or MasterCard) which issued the card and the name of the payment card holder
  • the three-digit security code (you will find this on the back of your card) – in practice,  you may come across the technical name for this code, CVV or CVV2 (for VISA payment cards) and CVC or CVC2 (for MasterCard payment cards).
  • Under no circumstances divulge your PIN to the vendor. The security code is not your PIN.

How to make safe card payments over the Internet? Information can be found here.

TIPS

  • Payment cards issued by KB must first be unblocked before they can be used for payment over the Internet. Your card can be unblocked at any branch of KB or on KB Expresní linka or the card can be unblocked via MojeBanka.
  • If you want to pay by card over the Internet, choose a vendor which supports secure transfer of data about your payment card (a description can be found below). If you have any doubts whatsoever about the trustworthiness of a vendor, we recommend you choose another method of payment.
  • We recommend that you do not purchase goods and services from unsecured vendors.
  • We offer you two options for making payments over the Internet:
    • change in the limits set for your payment card,
    • use of a virtual e-Card.
Description of individual types of security
    • SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) protocol – the secure certificate is graphically depicted on the bottom toolbar of your screen in the form of a “gold” lock and the logo “Verified by VISA” or “MasterCard SecureCode”.
    • If you double-click on this lock, the security certificate will be displayed. Another possible sign of a secure website is the website address itself – https://. You provide data to the vendor in secure format.
    • Unsecured vendor – you provide the vendor with all data about your payment card in unsecure format during the transaction (addresses of unsecure websites are indicated http://).
Payments made on a self-service terminal

A self-service payment terminal allows the payment card holder to make purchases without the presence of staff (e.g. in hypermarkets or when purchasing fuel etc.). Follow the instructions for use of your card. No signature of the card holder is required for this type of payment. You will be asked by the terminal to enter your PIN (some types of terminals or types of payments do not even require PIN entry, e.g. toll payments).

Using your card abroad

Use of payment cards abroad is possible to the same scope as in the Czech Republic. All cards issued by KB are valid internationally. Acceptance of payment cards is given by the scope of coverage of vendors in the given location. Locators from VISA and MasterCard can be used.

ATM operations

Operations at KB ATMs (ATM - Automated Teller Machine) are simple, the on-screen texts will guide you through the complete options. In cases when the ATM does not dispense the requested amount, it is possible that it does not have sufficient banknotes available or that you have already used up your weekly limit, which was arranged on signature of the Contract on issue and use of the payment card, or that you are requesting payment of an amount which exceeds the available balance in your account. In these cases, the ATM will ask you to change the amount you are requesting.

  • As soon as your request is accepted (the ATM no longer offers further options), the ATM will return your card by ejecting  it from the reader and then dispense your cash. If you asked for a paper receipt, a receipt will be printed for you with details of the transaction performed.

TIPS

  • Warning: if you feel threatened, cancel the transaction by pressing the red CANCEL button. The operation will be cancelled and your card retuned unless the cash dispensing phase has already been reached.
  • Take care that nobody was watching you enter your PIN and do not allow yourself to be disturbed by anybody during the transaction.
  • For withdrawals in the USA or in Europe, it is possible that the ATM network operator will impose charges at the  level of USD 1–5 for use of the ATM. This fee is added to the withdrawal amount.
  • In the event of withdrawal of larger amounts, you may be forced to split the transaction into several attempts.
  • The maximum level of withdrawn amounts may be limited by the ATM operator’s internal regulations.
  • A list of KB ATMs can be found at www.kb.cz.
Topping up mobile telephone credit

You can also use your payment card to pay for mobile telephone credit in ATMs marked with the logo of the given mobile operator. Topping up of credit usually occurs within a few minutes of the operation at the ATM. The mobile operator will send confirmation of topping up via SMS. The  ATM will automatically print you a receipt, which serves as a tax document.

TIPS

  • This serviced is offered to you free of charge.
  • It is also possible at some ATMs and for some operators to even pay for other services such as invoice payment, increasing a call limit, payment of a deposit for roaming or calls abroad etc.
  • In the event of any discrepancies whatsoever, contact the customer service centre of the pertinent mobile operator.
Ascertaining account balance

You can use an ATM to simply and quickly find out the available balance of the account which your payment card is issued for if the owner of the account allows such display (in cases when you are not also the owner of the account).

TIPS

  • In the event of withdrawal of larger amounts, you may be forced to split the transaction into several attempts
  • The maximum level of withdrawn amounts may be limited by the ATM operator’s internal regulations

KB ATMs will warn you that the validity of your payment card is about to expire 60 days before its validity actually does expire.

Car rental centres, the same as hotels, may require a guarantee for services provided in the form of you providing the number of your embossed payment card.
